Job Interview Tips 4 – You’re Hired | Learn English | British Council

Practice exercises:

Daniel makes some classic mistakes in his interview.

Marcia Boardman: Good morning Daniel!

Daniel: Dan, please…

Marcia Boardman: I’m Marcia Boardman — we spoke on the phone — and this is Philip Hart, our CEO.

Philip Hart: Hello!

Daniel: Nice to meet you both.

Philip Hart: So it says here on your CV that you’re interested in rock climbing…

Daniel: Yeah…love it!

Philip Hart: Great — so do I! When did you last go climbing?

Daniel: Oh, er, well, it was a while ago now…

Philip Hart: Anywhere interesting?

Daniel: Yeah. I walked up the hill behind my house. Took me about thirty minutes!

Philip Hart: Oh.

Marcia Boardman: Ok, erm, Daniel, can you tell us a little bit about your current position?

Daniel: Certainly — as it says in the CV, I’m part of the European Sales team at Networld. We’re the world’s leading supplier of IT hardware.

Philip Hart: Why do you want to move on?

Daniel: Well, they’re too small for me.

Marcia Boardman: Networld!? Networld are too small for you?

Daniel: Oh yeah. I’m looking for something much bigger.

Philip Hart: Well, we’re not a big company by any means, but we are looking to grow! What first attracted you to WebWare in particular?

Daniel: Well, I see WebWare as kind of like a stepping stone…

Marcia Boardman: Sorry?

Daniel: Yeah, start here gain the necessary experience, then move onto something bigger.

Philip Hart: Ok…well, I do admire your ambition!

Daniel: Thanks — I’ve got lots of it!

Marcia Boardman: Let’s move on to managing people. Can you give an example of a time when you had to deal with a particularly difficult managee?

Daniel: Sure — well I think that’s one of my strong points actually. A couple of years ago, I was working with a guy, he wasn’t pulling his weight, basically being lazy — so I told him to get out.

Marcia Boardman: Oh, you didn’t give him a performance review, or a warning, or perhaps try to help develop his motivation?

Daniel: No,no, no. None of that rubbish. If someone’s not working hard enough, then they’re out! That’s the way I work. I’m a hard man.

Marcia Boardman: I see.

Philip Hart: How would you handle a rapidly changing market?

Daniel: Basically not change anything at all! Just continue on as normal regardless!

Marcia Boardman: According to your CV you are fluent in Mandarin…

Daniel: Well, I wouldn’t say ‘fluent’ exactly…but, I like Chinese food a lot — so I can read the menu!

Philip Hart: So you can’t actually speak the language?

Daniel: Erm, no.

Marcia Boardman: Can you tell us about a time you had to close a particularly challenging deal.

Daniel: I haven’t had one. They’re all easy for me. I close deals all the time!

Marcia Boardman: Ok — well do you have any questions for us?

Daniel: No.

Philip Hart: Oh. Ok. Erm. Thanks.

Marcia Boardman: Let’s move on to the presentation…

Job Interview Tips (Part 8): Calm Your Nerves Before a Job Interview

Job interviews can be scary. But, there are a few things you can do beforehand to help you calm down.

In this video, we’re going to give you some tips on how to work through the nerves. That’s coming up.

So, you’ve done all your research, practiced common job interview questions and the butterflies in your stomach won’t seem to go away.

Let’s be honest here, not many of us really look forward to job interviews. They can be nerve-racking, stressful and scary. We’ve got a few tricks to help you push through it.

1) Drink some tea – Herbal tea is a great way to help relax the muscles so that you can really focus on the interview itself.

2) Wash out the nerves – Take a long shower or bath to help you become alert, relaxed and ready to bring your ‘A’ game.

3) Just breathe – Take long deep breathes right before the interview to increase the flow of oxygen in your body. This will help you concentrate and focus on what’s ahead.

4) Treat yourself – Plan an activity after the interview that you know you will enjoy. Something as simple as treating yourself to ice cream will give you something to look forward to.

5) Believe in yourself – Now is not the time to think negative, self-destructive thoughts. Go into the interview knowing that you’ve done everything you could have to prepare for the big event.

Know in your heart that you will nail it and that you are the best fit for the position. If you walk in feeling defeated, it will show in your answers and you’re better than that!

Job Interview Tips – How to Prepare For a Job Interview

How to prepare for a job interview in 5 easy steps. Watch Jeff & Mike teach you how you should be preparing for a job interview. For how to answer interview questions check out:

We hope this video from Jeff & Mike “The Interview Guys” gives you a few useful tips when it comes to getting ready for your job interview. Some of these may seem like common sense but you would be surprised how many people miss them.

Hi, I’m Jeff. And this is my friend Mike. You probably know us as the Interview Guys.

Today we’re coming to you live from Jeff’s apartment, where we’re going to teach you five great ways to prepare for a job interview. And make
sure you watch the video all the way to the end because we’ve got a big surprise for you. Okay Jeff, what’s our first job preparation tip?

Our first tip may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people don’t follow it. Tip #1 is that you always need
to be well rested. That means no all-night cramming sessions!

You need to be alert when you are in the room, so
that you are able to give clear and concise answers and maintain a high level of energy and enthusiasm.

Okay, I’ve got to go get changed for my interview. Mike, can you handle the next tip?

Sure Jeff. Job preparation Tip #2 is to dress for the job. If you’re interviewing for an office job, you don’t want to go in wearing beach clothes, and if you’re
going for an interview to be a lifeguard, you don’t want to wear a suit. Dressing as you would at the job you are interviewing for will help the interviewer envision you
in the roll already, which can only help you get the job!

Okay I’m ready for my interview!

Uhhh, Jeff? What did you do to your hair? And what are you wearing?

I’m going for a Bank Teller at Citibank. Do you like my shirt?

Yeah, it’s really cool. But i’m not sure the bank is going to think so. This, folks, is an example of what not to wear. Okay Jeff, while you go
change back into the proper attire, I’ll do tip # 3.

Our third job preparation technique is to clean up your online presence (social media). Companies today are being more and more thorough when doing
background checks on their potential candidates, and this includes Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. Make sure you don’t have any
incriminating photos or bad language written on your wall!

Job preparation Tip #4 is to figure out where you are going, how long it is going to take and the transportation options available. You don’t want to be late! One thing
is for sure…if you are late, you have already taken yourself out of the running for the position. It’s always good to give yourself about 30 minutes of extra time.
Worst case scenario you get to prepare a little more while you wait!

Our final tip is the most important one…you need to practice! It’s important to prepare and practice examples of interview questions, but you don’t just want to give cookie
cutter answers that you find on the internet. You want to tailor your answers to the company you are interviewing with, and you do that by infusing
your answers with the qualities, or strengths and abilities, that the company you are interviewing with values.

Don’t worry, because we can show you exactly how to tailor your answers like we mentioned in Tip #5! Because we’ve prepared a special report that explains
our tailoring method completely and outlines exactly how to prepare perfect answers to every interview question.
