Job Interview Tips (Part 14): How To Format A Resume
Today we’re going to give you some quick tips on how to format a resume. That’s coming up.
Hi guys, I’m Kim with Snagajob, your number one source for hourly jobs and welcome to our weekly show.
I know I don’t have to tell you this, but resumes are important. They are one of the first impressions you give to employers so you want to make sure yours stands out for the right reasons. But, where should you start?
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about resumes.
How long should my resume be?
Keep your resume between 1-2 pages. You dont’ want to overwhelm the employer and you should be able to fit everything on a couple pages.
Should I have an objective statement?
They are not necessary. Objective statements are a little outdated, kind of lame and hard to keep up with. THe objective is to get a job right? Instead of an objective statement, think about adding a skills section at the top of your resume to highlight your strengths.
What about my references?
You shouldn’t include your references on your actual resume. But, you should have them available to the employer. Create another document with your resumes listed.
Is my email address important?
I cannot tell you just how important your email address is. I recommend creating a professional email address with just your first and last name. This way you won’t risk coming across as inappropriate and you’ll have all your job search emails in one place.
What’s the biggest resume mistake?
Employers tell us that typos on resumes is the biggest mistake they see. This is an automatic red flag and can make it look like you may be careless on the job like you are with your resume. Have a friend or family member look over your resume to see what you’ve missed. I do this and can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed something major.
