When we visit a cinema, museum, art gallery or any exhibition we will see a multitude of different lights illuminating various areas, the lights are all very different in size, brightness and colour. Over the past couple of decades there has been a real awareness for the need to reduce power consumption of bulbs, making them more efficient to use and longer lasting in their design.
Many lighting manufacturers are now turning to the production of 12v LED fittings and are providing a larger market of low powered lighting for various consumer markets. Low energy fittings are now the only kind of fitting that retailers will stock in their stores.
COB technology is the latest advancement in LED light technology. COB – chips on board, use onboard ceramic chips and a driver in one fitting. They are very bright and low in energy consumption, using only 5 watts of power and because of this the heat output of the lamp is low, which has its own benefits. They have the same output as a 50watt GU10 halogen bulb.
How energy efficient are 12v ceiling lights? Lumens measure the lights efficiency and are divided by its wattage, a bulb that is 100 percent efficient in transferring its energy into light has an efficiency of 683 lm/W. An old type incandescent bulb would have an efficiency of 15 lm/W compared to a standard LED bulb which has an average efficiency of 85 lm/W.
The colour temperature of the ceiling bulb chosen is a major factor in obtaining the correct lighting of the area needed. Bulbs come in a range of whites, from a warm white to a day light colour. You can also purchase 12v RGB type light fittings that can give you a whole range of different colours of light if required.
All bulbs are measured in lumens and watts. Lumens are measured in degrees Kelvin or K. And are rated on a scale from 1000K up to 10000K. Normal residential and commercial premises will consist of lighting between 2000K to 6500K. Warm white will be in the range of 2000K to 3000K, cool white will be from 3000K to 4500K and Day will be 4600K to 6500K.
12v ceiling lights offer a several advantages over the old incandescent light bulbs of the past. They are virtually maintenance free, many will state operations running times well in excess of several thousand hours and most people will probably move home before the fitting needs changing again.
Do I need a fire hood for my 12v LED installation? Fire hoods slow down the process of fire penetrating the space where the bulb sits. If the ceiling bulb is fire rated then you will not require a fire hood for the installation of the ceiling bulb. If they are not fire rated and are to be installed under a living space above, similar to a bedroom, then a fire hood should be used in the installation.
12v led ceiling lights can angle the light in different directions; from 45 degrees to 90 degrees. At 45 degrees angle the light will shine directly underneath the lamp and a 90 degree angle will give a broader light. Unlike CFLs which require a few minutes to reach full brightness, LEDs are instantaneously bright.
Obtaining these bulbs from an online retailer could not be simpler. A search online will bring up a list of companies offering the products that you may require. They will offer helpful advice on the correct product to purchase and will give a breakdown of the important details of each bulb, from wattage, lumens, ideal use all the way through to average running lifespan in hours.
