Before you read a single palace, before you interpret a single stem or door, you should verify your chart. I mean actually verify it, not glance at it and assume it is right. Casting is a mechanical process, and mechanical processes produce errors. A wrong hour, a swapped stem, a date that rolled over without you noticing. Any of these will give you a chart that looks real but answers a different question than you think. Verification is the step that catches those errors before they become readings. It takes two minutes. Skipping it is the most expensive shortcut you will ever take.
What Verification Actually Means
Verification is not about checking that your interpretation is correct. That is a different skill. Verification is about confirming that the chart itself is structurally sound. The right date, the right hour, the right day stem, the right hour stem, the palaces in the right positions. Think of it like a pilot’s pre-flight checklist. The pilot does not wait until they are in the air to discover that the fuel gauge is wrong. They check before they take off.
I learned this habit the hard way. Early in my practice, I cast a chart for a business question, read it confidently, gave the client my interpretation, and then discovered I had used the wrong day stem. The entire reading was built on a chart that was structurally incorrect. Point 2: The hour. Confirm the double-hour from solar time, not clock time. I covered the solar time conversion in detail elsewhere, but the key point for verification is: after you convert, write down the hour branch and double-check which double-hour it corresponds to. The Zi hour is 11pm to 1am. The Hai hour is 9pm to 11pm. If your solar time falls at 10:50pm, you are in Hai, not Zi. Write the hour branch on your chart.
Point 3: The day stem. The day stem is determined by the Chinese date in the sixty-cycle. Look it up. Do not calculate it in your head during a casting unless you have done it thousands of times. Even then, verify against a reference. The day stem sets the stem sequence for the entire chart. If the day stem is wrong, every palace stem is wrong.
Point 4: The hour stem. The hour stem is determined by the day stem and the hour branch. There is a fixed rule: the hour stem follows the day stem in a pattern governed by the five elements. For a Jia or Ji day, the Zi hour starts with Jia. For a Yi or Geng day, the Zi hour starts with Bing. And so on through the cycle. Look this up. Write it on your chart. Confirm it matches what the chart software or manual calculation gave you.
Point 5: Palace positions. The nine palaces have fixed positions in the chart layout, but the content of each palace rotates based on the hour. Verify that the palace in the hour position matches the hour branch. If the chart says the Wu hour is in the wrong palace, something went wrong in the casting or in the software.
If all five points pass, the chart is structurally sound. You can proceed to interpretation with confidence. If any point fails, do not try to patch the chart. Recast it from scratch. Patching introduces errors that are harder to catch than the original mistake.
Using Software to Cast? Still Verify
Most of my students use software to build their charts. Some use apps, some use web-based tools. Software is fast and convenient, and I have no objection to it. But software has bugs, time zone databases go stale, and DST rules change. If the software was last updated two years ago and a country has since changed its DST schedule, every chart cast for that location is wrong.
The verification process is your defence against software errors. You are not duplicating the software’s work. You are checking its output against the five-point checklist. If the software gives you a day stem of Bing and your independent lookup says Ding, you have caught a software error. It happens. Not often, but often enough that skipping verification is a gamble.
I recommend doing the five-point check on every chart for your first year of practice. After that, you can reduce to spot-checking, but do not eliminate it entirely. Verifying Charts Cast by Others
If a student or colleague sends you a chart to review, verify it before you comment. The same five-point checklist applies. You would be surprised how often student-submitted charts have errors. A wrong hour stem, a date that did not roll over, a DST miscalculation. If you interpret the chart without verifying, you are building on their unverified foundation. If they made an error, your interpretation will be wrong, and they will think the error was in your reading, not in their casting.

The pattern is called the five-rat rule, and it is easy to look up but surprisingly easy to misremember under pressure.
