Timing is what the Qimen hour chart was built for. Unlike destiny charts that map a lifetime, the hour chart captures the energetic weather of a single two-hour block. This makes it the most powerful tool in Chinese metaphysics for answering one specific type of question: is now the right time to do this thing?

I have used timing questions more than any other type in my practice. When a student asks whether to launch a course, when a client asks whether to sign a contract, when a friend asks whether to have a difficult conversation, the answer almost always lives in the timing. The Qimen chart does not tell you what will happen. It tells you what the current energy supports, and from that, you can determine whether the moment is right for your intended action.

What Makes a Good Timing Question

A good timing question has three elements: a specific action, a specific moment, and a clear purpose. Let me break each down.

Specific Action

Not “should I do something” but “should I send the proposal email.” Not “is it a good time” but “is it a good time to call the investor.” The action must be concrete enough that you could do it right now if the chart says yes.

Specific Moment

The hour chart is inherently about the present. “Should I do this now?” is the core question. You can extend it to “should I do this today?” by checking the day stem alongside the hour, or “should I do this this week?” by checking the month plate. Clear Purpose

Why are you asking? “Should I send the email now because I want to close the deal this week” is different from “should I send the email now because I am anxious and want to get it over with.” The chart reads the energy, but your purpose affects how you interpret the reading. If the chart says the pathway is open but your purpose is driven by anxiety, the energy may be favorable but your state of mind may cause you to send a rushed, poorly worded email.

Reading the Plates for Timing

When the question is about timing, the plates tell you different things than they do for other question types. Here is how I read them.

The Door Plate: Is the Path Open Now?

The door is the most important plate for timing questions. An Open Door means the pathway is clear right now. Whatever action you are considering, the energy supports it in this moment. A Rest Door means the path is not blocked but the energy is quiet, which is good for planning and preparation but not for bold action. An Obstacle Door means the path has resistance, and a Death Door means the path is closed for now and the old approach must end.

The Star Plate: What Is the Momentum?

The star tells you about momentum and driving force. A Heavenly star suggests divine timing, a sense that the universe is aligned. A Destiny star suggests the action aligns with your path. A Danger star warns of hidden risks even if the door is open. A Grain star suggests steady, productive energy. For timing questions, the star modifies the door reading: an Open Door with a Danger star means the path is open but proceed carefully.

The Earth Plate: Is the Ground Stable?

The earth plate tells you whether the foundation is solid for the timing. If you are asking whether to launch a product, the earth plate reflects whether the market foundation is ready. Interpreting Mixed Signals

The most common timing reading is not a clean yes or no. It is a mixed signal. Open Door with a Danger star. Favorable heavenly but weak earth. Understanding how to read these combinations is what separates a beginner from an experienced practitioner.

Mix One: Open Door, Unfavorable Star

The pathway is open but the momentum is problematic. This usually means you can proceed but the journey will be harder than expected. Think of it as a road that is open but has potholes. The action is possible, but you need to be more careful than you would if the star were also favorable.

Mix Two: Closed Door, Favorable Earth

The foundation is solid but the pathway is blocked. This is frustrating but clear: the timing is wrong even though the situation itself is good. Wait for a better hour. The door will change with the next two-hour block, and the foundation will still be there.

Mix Three: Favorable Door and Star, Weak Earth

The pathway is open and the momentum is good, but the foundation is shaky. Proceed, but shore up the foundation first. In practical terms, this means: yes, do the thing, but make sure your preparation is solid before you act.

A mixed reading is not a failed reading. It is a nuanced reading. The chart is telling you the conditions under which the timing works, not just whether it works.

The Waiting Strategy

What do you do when the chart says the timing is wrong? You wait. But waiting is not passive. You wait strategically. Here is the approach I teach my students.

First, note the current hour and its energy. Then check the next few hours. The door changes every two hours, so the pathway that is blocked now may open in the next block. You do not need to cast a new chart for every future hour. You can look at the hour stems for the day and identify which two-hour blocks have favorable door combinations.

Second, use the waiting period to prepare. If the chart shows weak earth, strengthen your foundation. Gather more information, prepare your materials, build your confidence. When the door opens, you want to be ready to walk through it immediately, not scrambling to get your shoes on.

A Sample Timing Reading

A student asked: “Should I submit the grant application today or wait until tomorrow?”

The chart showed a Death Door in the hour palace, which meant the pathway was closed for this type of action. But the earth plate was stable, and the heavenly showed a Grain star, suggesting steady productive energy. The reading: do not submit today. The door is closed for this action. But the foundation is good and the climate is productive, which means tomorrow is likely to be better. Check the door for the morning hour. If it opens, submit then.

The student submitted the next morning when the door showed Open. The application was accepted. The WAF Principle: Windows Are Finite

One of the most important concepts in timing readings is what I call the WAF principle: windows are finite. Every favorable timing window in a Qimen hour chart is temporary. The door that is open in the 9am block may be closed by 11am. This sounds obvious, but beginners constantly miss it because they treat a good reading as a permanent endorsement rather than a temporary opening.

The hour chart reads a two-hour window. Your action needs to happen within that window, or at least begin within it, for the energy to support it. If your reading at 2pm shows an Open Door for “Should I send the proposal today?” and you wait until 7pm to actually send it, the energy has shifted. The two-hour window was favorable, but you missed it.

This is why I teach students to cast and act. Do not cast a chart, get a green light, and then spend three hours deliberating. The window closes. If the chart says go, go. If your situation requires more preparation, prepare first and cast when you are ready to act in the same hour block. The WAF principle also applies in reverse. If the chart shows an unfavorable door at 9am, the 11am block might show a completely different picture. The unfavorable window is also finite. Beginners sometimes read a single unfavorable chart and conclude the whole day is bad. In reality, the energy shifts every two hours, and one blocked window does not mean the entire day is blocked. Cast in a later hour block and the door may have opened.

This hypothetical day illustrates the WAF principle beautifully. The morning gives you an opening. The midday blocks it. The afternoon gives you another opening. A practitioner who understands that windows are finite knows to check the next block when the current one is closed, rather than giving up on the entire day. How often should I recast for a timing question?

Cast once for the current moment. If the answer is unfavorable, wait and cast again in the next two-hour block. Do not recast within the same hour. The energy does not change within the block, so a new chart will give you the same reading.

What if I cannot wait? The deadline is today.

If you cannot wait, act with extra caution. The chart tells you the energy is not favorable, but you still have free will. Compensate by being more careful, more thorough, and more prepared than you would be under favorable conditions. Can I use the hour chart to pick a wedding date?

Does the hour chart work for every time zone?

Yes, but you must cast the chart for the local time of where the action will take place. If you are in Singapore but asking about a meeting in New York, cast for New York local time. The energy is location-specific.
