Brief History of Qi Men Dun Jia

Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) refers to the ancient form of divination practiced by the Chinese. A 5,000 years old Chinese Metaphysics which is one of the three most respected Three Styles (三式; sānshì; ‘three styles’) of Chinese Metaphysics from China, with Da Liu Ren & Tai Yi Shen Shu. It is primarily used for military strategy and planning. In fact, Chinese scholars attributed their victory during the Battle of the Red Cliffs to Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲). The strategic planning drawn from the application of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) resulted to the end of the Han dynasty. Chinese scholars likewise believed that the use of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) helped defeat Cao-Cao’s ship borne army. Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) may be the counterpart for secret military operatives or information. It was the same back then. This technique is also tagged as classified. It is only made available to the ruling dynasty or class and not to the general public. Qi Men Dun Jia: The Basics
There are four major schools of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲). These are Astronomical Qi-Men or Qin-Dun, San-yuan Qi Men, Fa-Qi-Men, and Fei-Gong Xiao-Qi-Men. Of these four schools, the Astronomical Qi-Men school did not survive. There was no descendant to continue the school anymore. The most popular is San-yuan Qi Men. If you want a simplified school, Fei-Gong-Xiao-Qi Men is the school. Fa-Qi-Men involves supernatural forces like talisman which are common in Daoism.
There are also four types of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲). Year QMDJ (for events that last a year or longer), Month QMDJ (for events that last a month), Day QMDJ (for events that last a day), and Hour QMDJ (for events that last an hour). The shorter the time it covers, the more popular it is amongst the Chinese. This made the Hour QMDJ the most popular among the four types of QMDJ.
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) focuses on two major tracks: the Right Place at the Right Time and Forecasting or Divination. You use the first major track when you aim to achieve specific goals at a certain time. This is especially helpful when you aim to win a negotiation or close a business deal. When you need to know the answer to a particular question, forecasting or divination is the track to use. This tract is results-driven, and it is reliant upon the time a particular question is being asked.
As between the two major tracks of QMDJ, it is forecasting and divination that requires a longer time. It is challenging because it is technical. It requires a long time before one can learn its ins and outs. There are too many variables involved when learning forecasting or divination. You need to be proficient about the 4-Pillars (which is likewise present when Bazi reading). You must also internalize the concepts of Bagua, the 9 Stars, the 8 Gods, and others. No ordinary person can learn all these concepts in such a short period of time. Most scholars tagged the use of QMDJ in forecasting or divination as an “overkill.”

You might have heard about Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) being referred to as a mathematical calculation of your stars. It is also sometimes labelled as a form of numerology, and more. This can’t be farther from the truth. Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) collates astronomical observations to come up with calculated results. These results can pertain to different aspects depending on what aspect you want. Qi Men Dun Jia is composed of various aspects of Chinese metaphysics. Certain elements come into play when calculating astronomical observations. Among these elements are the Yin and Yang doctrine, 10 Heavenly Stems, 12 Earthly Branches, 8 Triagrams, 5 Elements, and the 24 Solar Terms.
Before delving deep into its technicality, it is best to know the fundamentals of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲). You don’t have to look further because its name bears its fundamentals:
- Qi – refers to the 3 heavenly stems of Yi (乙日奇), Bing (丙月奇) and Ding (丁星奇).
- Men – refers to the 3 doors of Kai (開), Xiu (休) and Sheng (生).
- Dun – meaning, “hide” refers to the concealment of the heavenly stem Jia (甲) from 6 other stems to protect it from Geng (庚). The 6 stems being Wu (戊), Ji (己), Geng (庚), Xin (辛), Ren (壬) and Gui (癸).
- Jia – meaning “leader” or “general”
Like most prediction systems which require calculation, analysis, and interpretation, Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) also uses a board. It is a 3×3 cosmic board that serves as your natal (birthday) chart. It is through this cosmic board that certain events will be calculated.

Also referred to as a Qi Map, it consists of the following variables each with a unique reference:
- The 8 triagrams within the 9 palaces refer to the later heaven arrangement of triagrams.
- Heavenly stems are the same 10 heavenly stems used in feng shui as well as in Bazi charts.
- The 8 gods represent ZhiFu( 直符), TengShe (螣蛇), TaiYin (太陰), LiuHe (六合), GouZhen (勾陳), ZhuQue (朱雀), JiuDi (九地), and JiuTian (九天).
- The Traveling Horse and Void Star are both considered single variables. They get to move around on the Qi map.
- The Heaven plate is composed of the 9 stars namely, TianChong (天冲), TianFu (天辅), TianYing (天英), TianRen (天任), TianQin (天禽), TianRui (天芮), TianXin (天心), TianZhu (天柱), TianPeng (天蓬).
- Earth plate refers to the 12 earthly branches used in Bazi charts.
- Man plate represents the 8 doors of Du (杜), Jing (惊), Si (死), Jing (景), Kai (開), Xiu (休), Sheng (生), Shang (伤).
The symbols or references abovementioned rotate around the 9 palaces with each double-hour of the day. This makes a total 1,080 unique configurations. These configurations are in turn recycled four times annually, divided accordingly between the Yin and Yang of the year. In other words, your final chart can be grouped into one of two categories: Yang Dun or Yin Dun. Both categories are composed of 9 types of Ju with 60 variations. Hence, the 1,080 total unique configurations.
Qi Men Dun Jia divination carries a unique set of Yongshenor Use Spirits. An example of this is medical divination which mainly relies on the Star Plate. Another example would be determining the weather. The star responsible for any weather-related questions would be the Tzianshu Star, also known as The Rain Maker. Knowing the type of star relating to the question allows analyst to easily identify which in cosmic natal chart to look. That responsible star must reside somewhere in your natal chart. Depending on what was being asked at the time of the divination, interpreters refer to your Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) cosmic board to find the divine answers related to the question. Your natal chart on the cosmic board serves as a reference in determining which amongst the 9 palaces possibly contains the answers to the questions posed. This makes Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) time sensitive.
Most often than not, our search for answers also leads to a series of questions, answers, or even problems. Because Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) is time sensitive, remarkably similar configurations on the cosmic board appears and it can’t be avoided.
Understanding the Variables: Meanings, Symbols and Elements
To fully understand the concept as well as the application of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲), it is best to understand the different variables or symbols involved. And there is quite a lot to understand. We will try to explain each variable in detail in our attempt to relate it to the application of Qi Men Dun Jia.
Heavenly Stems
You have probably encountered this variable a couple of times during your readings related to feng shui. Surely, you have encountered this one on a topic related to Bazi reading. In feng shui, there are 10 heavenly stems, and they refer to Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren and Gui. These heavenly stems are believed to have a close connection with the sun’s movement. Each one carries a specific meaning.

But the application of the ten heavenly stems does not stop there. Apart from its usual meanings or symbols, the ten heavenly stems carry with it hidden meanings too which are not intended for public information. Always remember that Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) is originally used for military strategies and tactics. Each stem denotes a military counterpart. In this case, Jia refers to a military general while Dun means hidden. In other words, Dun Jia refers to the Hidden General. The other heavenly stems like Yi, Bing, and Ding are considered as the Three Wonders. In military application, they are assigned to the Headquarters, Policy Department, and Logistics Departments. Alternatively, Yin can be considered as the Idea Man, Bing as the Bodyguard, and Ding as the Logistic Officer. All of them work closely with the General.
Correlatively, in the application of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) for military purposes, the heavenly stems are interpreted in such a way that an analyst can come up with a battalion, detachment, or reinforcements. This detachment is referred to as Liu Yi. Each one composing this detachment holds a flag. These flags, depending on the element represented by the heavenly stem, are colored either yellow (e.g. Yang/ earth element), or white (e.g. Yin/ metal element).
Earthly Branches
The earthly branches are likewise a familiar variable which are both present in numerous feng shui articles and used an important element in Bazi reading. It represents the 12 animals in your zodiac. While the heavenly stems connect to the movement of the sun, the earthly branches connect to the movement of the moon. Each branch likewise carries a particular meaning.

The application of the heavenly stems and the earthly branches as variables to Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) is similar to the application of these same variables to a Bazi chart. In taking these elements into computation, it still follows the 60 years : 1 cycle ratio of the Chinese generation. Just the same, 10 heavenly stems cycles 6 (multiplied by the 10 heavenly stems) times to complete 1 generation, while the earthy branches cycle 5 (multiplied by the 12 zodia animals) times to complete 60 years or a generation.
The 8 Triagrams and 9 Palaces
These 9 palaces are the ones you see on a Lou Sho Chart. The represent different aspects of you life and they follow the following numerical arrangement:
Chinese scholars and feng shui masters have a technique in memorizing these numerical figures. They chant these numbers like a nursery rhyme and it goes like this:
“9 up on the head and 1 down under my feet, left 3 and right 7, 4 and 2 on my shoulder, 8 and 6 are my feet. “
Yup, still hard to follow. I don’t know how they easily memorize something that’s not even rhyming. So, you’re not alone. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Remember, Liu Yi, the military detachment? We’ve mentioned it under Heavenly Stems. It is important to mention them again here because they also appear in your Earth Plate. Below is a general pattern of the Earth Plate that shows the Liu Yi:

It would be difficult to understand the table above if we don’t discuss the meaning of Liu Yi, San Qi, Ju, heavenly Qi, as well as its arrangement in the 9 palaces. Let’s get back to the table above later.
Liu Yi refers to the 6 detachments composed of Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Jia, Yi, and Bing. As mentioned at the first part of this article, each holds a flag depending on the element they represent. These 6 detachments are Jia-Zi, Jia-Xu, Jia-Shen, Jia-Wu, Jia-Chen and Jia-Yin hide them. In the table below, are the elements the detachment represents, the category of heavenly Qi they belong to, and they color of their flag.

San Qi on the other hand refers to the 3 high valued commanders. In the Earth Plate in Table 3, these 3 high valued commanders are Wonder Moon, Wonder Sun, and Wonder Star.
Liu Yi and San Qi, therefore, totals to 9 variables which are perfectly assigned to 9 palaces in succession. This succession refers to the Ju, which means situation. This providesthe cyclical numbers assigned in the two categories of heavenly Qi: Yang and Yin. In Chinese astrology and culture, as well as feng shui, it is best to consult the Dun Jia calendar before deciding anything important. The Dun Jia calendar determines whether the date falls on a Yang Dun or Yin Dun. During a Yin Dun period, the Yin energy is believed to get stronger day by day. This period in the Dun Jia calendar commences on summer solstice and ends on winter solstice. On the other hand, a Yang Dun period increases the Yang energy and begins when winter solstice ends. It ends on the next summer solstice.
Ju Shu ascends during a Yang Dun period and descends during a Yin Dun period.
If you look back at Table 3. Earth Plate, it is now easy to understand what those variables mean. The next question would be, how to analyze it. But this should be for a later discussion. Let’s stick to understanding the variables composing your Qi Men Dun Jia chart first.
Heaven Plate
In the application of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲), knowing your Earth Plate will never be enough. It only refers to the “matter” of things and that is only one aspect which can be changed by other influences. In ancient Chine belief, all things surrounding us are influenced by 3 factors – Earth, Heaven, and Man. The Heaven Plate represents the influence from Above. This influence comes via an electromagnetic spectrum. The Heaven Plate is composed of 9 stars, referred to as Zhi Fu. A general pattern of a Heaven Plate looks like the table below:

All 9 Zhi Fu denotes symbols and meanings that are equally important. By simply knowing where the location of your Zhi Fu in the Eight Triagram, you will know how to improve an aspect of your life. Below is a table showing the meanings of Zhi Fu and what you can do about it.

Now that we’ve discussed two out of three factors which influence the things surrounding us, there is only one factor left to discuss: The Man Plate. The human plate provides for what could possibly influence all things because of humans. If you come to think of it, you might believe there is no end to discussing this factor. This is considering how big a man’s influence is to things that surround as how we perceive it. But in the application of Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲), the Man Plate represents the 8 doors of Du, Jing, Si, Jing, Kai, Xiu, Sheng, and Shang. Each door is designated to a palace number and denotes different meanings. The table shows the corresponding meaning for each Doors in their specific number in the 9 palaces along with its direction:

Uses of Qi Men Dun Jia
In retrospect, Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) is a method used to manipulate the qi or beneficial energy drawn from your interactions in a specific time, space, and purpose. Once unlocked, its magnetic properties can boost the qi of the person making him achieve his desired results.
