Time Zones and Solar Time

If you are casting a QMDJ chart for someone in another country, the single most common error is using their clock time without adjusting for solar time. I teach students across 28 countries, and I can tell you that time zone confusion causes more wrong charts than any other single mistake. Not because the concept is hard. It is because it feels obvious, so people skip the conversion and cast with raw clock time. The chart looks fine. The palaces are in place. But the chart is answering the wrong moment, and the reading will feel off in a way you cannot quite pin down. The worst part is that you will blame your interpretation skills when the real problem is that you cast for the wrong hour.

Why Clock Time Lies

Clock time is a political invention. Time zones were standardised in the late nineteenth century to make railway schedules work. Before that, every town set its clocks by the sun. Noon was when the sun was highest. That is solar time, and it is the time QMDJ actually uses.

When governments drew time zone lines, they averaged things for convenience. A whole country might sit in one zone even though its eastern and western edges are hundreds of kilometres apart in solar terms. Then daylight saving shifts everything by an hour for part of the year. By the time you look at your phone, the time on the screen could be thirty or forty minutes away from true solar time at your location.

For everyday life, that gap does not matter. You show up for meetings on time and nobody cares whether the sun is at its meridian at exactly 12:00. But for QMDJ, the gap matters enormously. The double-hour boundaries are set by the sun, not by your government’s timezone policy. If you cast at 2:15pm clock time but solar time at your location is 1:45pm, you are casting in a different double-hour than you think. The chart will be built on the wrong branch, the wrong stem, and the wrong palace assignment. Every reading you make from that chart will be built on sand.

I want you to feel the weight of this for a second. A QMDJ chart is a precise instrument. It maps the relationship between heaven, earth, and time at a specific moment. That moment is defined by the sun’s position, not by a committee’s decision about time zone boundaries. When you cast without converting, you are asking the chart to answer a question about a moment that does not exist in nature. The chart will still produce palaces and stems. It will look like a real chart. But it will be a chart for a phantom hour, and your interpretation will be internally consistent with nothing real.

The Solar Time Conversion

Converting clock time to solar time is straightforward once you know the method. You need two things: your longitude and your time zone’s reference meridian.

The reference meridian is the line of longitude that your time zone is based on. For Singapore Time (UTC+8), the reference meridian is 120 degrees east. For US Eastern Time (UTC-5), it is 75 degrees west. For UK time (UTC+0), it is 0 degrees, the Greenwich meridian.

Here is the calculation. Take the difference between your longitude and the reference meridian. Every degree of difference equals four minutes of solar time adjustment. If you are east of the reference meridian, your solar time is ahead of clock time. If you are west, your solar time is behind.

Example. Singapore sits at roughly 104 degrees east. The UTC+8 reference meridian is 120 degrees east. The difference is 16 degrees. Singapore is west of the reference meridian, so solar time is behind clock time by 16 times 4 minutes, which is 64 minutes. When the clock says 2pm in Singapore, solar time is about 12:56pm. That is a full double-hour difference. A chart cast at 2pm clock time should actually be cast for the Wu hour (11am to 1pm solar), not the Wei hour (1pm to 3pm clock). If you have a student in Singapore who has been casting at 2pm and using the Wei hour, every single one of those charts is wrong. Not slightly wrong. Completely wrong. Different palace, different stem, different door, different everything.

I have seen this error flip charts completely. A student in Perth once could not understand why her readings were consistently wrong for local questions but fine when she practised on questions from her hometown in Malaysia. Perth is at about 116 degrees east, in the UTC+8 zone. Solar time adjustment is about 16 minutes, which was small enough to not change the double-hour. But she had been casting for clients in Adelaide, which is in a different time zone and at a different longitude, and she was using Adelaide clock time without conversion. The error was enough to put her in the wrong double-hour for half her charts. Once she started converting, her accuracy for Adelaide clients improved immediately. The interpretation skills were already there. The time error had been the problem all along.

Casting for Clients in Other Countries

When you cast a chart for someone in another country, you need to convert their local clock time to solar time at their location. Not at yours. Their moment, their longitude, their solar time. This sounds obvious when I say it, but in practice people default to their own time zone without thinking. A chart for a client in New York should not be built with Singapore solar time. Yet I have seen it happen more than once.

Here is the workflow I teach. When a client or fellow student in another country asks you to cast, ask them three things: the local clock time of the question or event, their city or coordinates, and whether daylight saving is in effect. Then do the conversion yourself. Do not ask them to calculate solar time, because most people have never heard of it and will get it wrong or feel confused, which undermines their confidence in your reading.

If a client in London asks you a question at 3pm their time in July, you need to know that British Summer Time is in effect. BST is UTC+1, so the reference meridian is 15 degrees east. London is at about 0.1 degrees west. The difference is about 15 degrees, and London is west of the reference meridian. Solar time adjustment is about 60 minutes behind. So 3pm BST is actually about 2pm solar time. That puts you in the Wei hour (1pm to 3pm solar), not the Shen hour (3pm to 5pm clock). The chart changes.

This is the normal situation for anyone teaching or consulting internationally. In the Apprentice program, I have students from the Americas, Europe, Australia, and all over Asia. If I cast charts for them using Singapore time, every single one would be wrong. The conversion is not optional. It is the difference between a useful reading and a nonsense one.

The Daylight Saving Trap

Daylight saving time is the most common cause of conversion errors, and it catches people twice. First, people forget to account for it when calculating the reference meridian. Second, the transition dates differ by country, so you can be in DST while your client is not, or vice versa.

The rule is: when DST is active, the reference meridian shifts by 15 degrees. A zone that normally sits at 120 degrees east shifts to 105 degrees east during DST. A zone at 75 degrees west shifts to 60 degrees west. You must check whether DST is active for the specific date and location before doing the conversion.

I keep a simple chart for the major regions my students come from. US Eastern: DST from mid-March to early November, reference shifts from 75W to 60W. UK: DST from late March to late October, reference shifts from 0 to 15E. Australia: DST from early October to early April (reversed because southern hemisphere), and several states skip it entirely. Western Australia does not observe DST. Queensland does not. This is why you cannot simply ask “is daylight saving on?” and assume the answer applies everywhere. You need to know the specific state or territory.

A student in Sydney once cast a chart for a friend in Brisbane in October. She applied DST adjustment because Sydney was in DST. But Brisbane does not observe DST. The time zone was the same (UTC+10) but the clock times were different by an hour. Her chart was off by a full hour, which in QMDJ terms meant the wrong double-hour. The reading made no sense to her friend. She called me confused, and we traced it back to the DST mismatch within the same nominal time zone. Two cities in the same country, one hour apart by policy, and the chart was wrong because of it.

A Practical Conversion Protocol

Here is the protocol I give my students. Print it, tape it next to your casting desk, and follow it every time until it becomes muscle memory:

  • Step 1: Note the local clock time of the question or event.
  • Step 2: Identify the standard time zone (UTC offset) for that location on that date.
  • Step 3: Check whether daylight saving is active for that specific location on that date. If yes, add 1 hour to the UTC offset.
  • Step 4: Determine the reference meridian from the UTC offset (UTC+8 equals 120E, UTC-5 equals 75W, etc.).
  • Step 5: Find the longitude of the specific city or location.
  • Step 6: Calculate the difference in degrees. Multiply by 4 to get minutes of adjustment.
  • Step 7: If the location is west of the reference meridian, subtract the adjustment from clock time. If east, add it.
  • Step 8: The result is solar time. Identify the double-hour from the solar time.

It takes about ninety seconds once you are used to it. For the first few weeks, it takes longer because you have to look up longitudes. I recommend keeping a spreadsheet with the longitudes of every city you regularly cast for. It turns a five-minute process into a thirty-second one.

Some students prefer to build a small script that does the conversion automatically. That is fine if you understand the math behind it. The danger of a script is that you stop thinking about the calculation and lose the intuition for when something is off. A script that has the wrong reference meridian for DST will quietly produce wrong answers, and you will not notice because the output looks reasonable. I have seen this happen. The student trusted the script for months before realising every chart was off by an hour during summer.

What About the Southern Hemisphere?

People often ask whether QMDJ works differently in the southern hemisphere. The double-hour system does not. The twelve branches cycle the same way regardless of where you are on Earth. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west everywhere. The solar time calculation is the same.

What does change in the southern hemisphere is the relationship between the seasons and the stems. When it is summer in Singapore, it is winter in Sydney. The timeliness readings, which depend on season and monthly assignment, need to be adjusted. But that is a seasonal question, not a time zone question. The double-hour boundaries are identical. A chart cast at 2pm solar time in Melbourne uses the same hour branch as a chart cast at 2pm solar time in Kuala Lumpur. The palace structure is the same. The seasonal interpretation may differ, but the casting mechanics do not.

I make this point explicitly in the hour chart course because it confuses southern hemisphere students. They sometimes assume the entire system is inverted for them. It is not. Only the seasonal layer adjusts. The hour system, the palace rotations, the stem assignments, all of that is global. The sun moves the same way in both hemispheres. It is the tilt of the Earth relative to the sun that changes, and that affects seasons, not the hourly division of the day.

When You Cannot Determine the Exact Location

Sometimes a client gives you a time but no location. They are travelling. They are between cities. They are on a plane. What do you do?

My rule is to ask. If they cannot tell you where they were when the question formed, use the location they are in when they tell you about it. The chart reflects the moment of casting. If you are casting for them based on a retold question, the chart is for the moment you build it, in your location, using your solar time. That is a different kind of chart than one cast at the moment the question arose, and you should note that in your reading. But it is not wrong. It is a chart for the consultation moment, not the origin moment. Both are valid if you are clear about which one you are reading.

What I would never do is guess a location. If someone says “I had this thought at 3pm yesterday but I was driving and I am not sure which town I was in,” I cast for the moment they are telling me, in their current location. The chart will speak to the question as it exists now, filtered through the consultation. That is usually what the client needs anyway. The question has evolved in their mind since yesterday. The chart should reflect the evolved version, not the original one.

Building a Location Reference Sheet

One of the first homework assignments I give new students is to build a personal location reference sheet. List every city you expect to cast charts for, yours and your clients’. For each city, write the longitude, the standard UTC offset, whether DST applies and when it starts and ends, and the solar time adjustment in minutes. When you are done, you have a single page that lets you convert in seconds.

I update mine every six months to catch any countries that have changed their DST rules. Governments do this more often than you would expect. A country that observed DST for thirty years might abolish it. A country that never used it might adopt it. Your reference sheet is only as good as its last update. I have a note in my calendar to review it every January and July.

This sounds bureaucratic, and for an art that is supposed to be about intuition and reading energy, a spreadsheet of longitudes feels mechanically unromantic. But the mechanical precision is what makes the intuitive reading possible. If your hour is wrong, your intuition is working on a false foundation. Get the foundation right, and then let your intuition do the real work on top of it.

The Confidence That Comes From Knowing Your Hour Is Right

There is a psychological dimension to the solar time conversion that I want to address. When you cast a chart and you know, with certainty, that the hour is correct, your reading changes. You stop hedging. You stop second-guessing the palace assignments. You commit to the interpretation because the foundation is solid. That confidence is not arrogance. It is the natural result of having done the groundwork. Your intuition works better when it is not busy wondering whether the chart is even in the right hour.

I can usually tell within the first two minutes of a student presenting a chart whether they converted the time correctly. The ones who did convert speak with a different energy. They walk through the palaces with ownership. The ones who skipped it tend to narrate tentatively, pausing at each step as if waiting for something to feel wrong. The conversion is a small step that removes a large layer of doubt from your entire reading process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an online solar time calculator instead of doing the math by hand?

Yes, and I encourage it for speed once you understand the method. But learn the calculation first. If you only ever use a calculator, you will not understand why the adjustment exists or what happens when daylight saving shifts. When the calculator gives you a surprising result, you need the underlying knowledge to judge whether it is right. I have seen online calculators that do not account for DST, or that use a generic time zone meridian instead of the correct one. Knowing the math protects you from trusting a broken tool.

Does the solar time adjustment ever change which Chinese date I should use?

Yes, and this is critical near the Zi hour boundary. If clock time is 11:15pm but solar time is 10:35pm, you are still in the Hai hour and the old Chinese date. If clock time is 11:15pm but solar time is 11:10pm, you are in the Zi hour and the new Chinese date. The solar time conversion can push you across the date line. Always check the double-hour after conversion, and if the hour is Zi, confirm whether the date has rolled over.

What if my client is in a country with a half-hour time zone offset, like India?

Half-hour and forty-five-minute offsets (India UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, parts of Australia UTC+9:30) work the same way. The reference meridian for UTC+5:30 is 82.5 degrees east. For UTC+5:45 it is 86.25 degrees east. The math is identical. Calculate the difference between the location’s longitude and the reference meridian, multiply by 4, and adjust. The fractional meridians are unusual but they do not change the method.
