Learning Curve: QMDJ Destiny Versus BaZi for Students

Students often ask which system is harder to learn. The honest answer depends on how your mind works. BaZi requires more memorisation and relational logic. QMDJ requires more spatial thinking and pattern recognition. Both demand years of practice to reach competence, but the path to competence is different in each system.

The BaZi Learning Path

BaZi learning follows a linear progression. You build each skill on top of the previous one, and the progression is well-defined enough that any student can follow it if they put in the hours.

Phase 1 (Months 1-3): Foundation. Learn the Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, their element associations, and how to derive the four pillars from a birth date. This is the most mechanical phase. You are learning the alphabet and basic grammar of the system.

Phase 2 (Months 3-9): Ten Gods. Learn the ten relationships of the day master to other stems. This is where BaZi becomes interpretive. The ten gods (Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Output stars, and Rob Wealth) each describe a personality tendency and relationship pattern. Memorising them is fast. Learning to interpret them accurately takes the full nine months.

Phase 3 (Months 9-18): Luck Pillars. Learn to calculate and interpret the ten-year and annual luck cycles. This is where BaZi becomes predictive. You are mapping when favorable and unfavorable periods arrive based on the solar term progression.

Phase 4 (Months 18-36): Synthesis. Combine all layers into a cohesive reading. This phase never really ends. Practitioners spend years refining their synthesis skill through case practice.

The QMDJ Digest Learning Path

QMDJ learning is less linear because the system is spatial and simultaneous. You cannot learn one palace at a time the way you learn one BaZi pillar at a time. All nine palaces exist together and interact. This makes the early learning phase more challenging for many students.

Phase 1 (Months 1-4): Chart Construction. Learn the nine-palace grid, the Luoshu arrangement, the four plates (Heaven, Earth, Human, Spirit), and how to construct a chart for a given date and time. This is more mechanically complex than BaZi pillar derivation because you are placing four layers of information simultaneously.

Phase 2 (Months 4-12): Component Reading. Learn the eight doors, nine stars, eight gods, and ten stems individually. What does each one mean? What is its nature and behavior? This is the memorisation phase, similar to BaZi ten gods but with more components to learn.

Phase 3 (Months 12-24): Combination Reading. Learn to read combinations. Door plus Star, plus God, plus Stem in a specific palace. Each component modifies the others. The Open Door alone means opportunity. The Open Door with the Heaven Heart Star means visionary opportunity. The Open Door with the Heaven Heart Star and the Chief God in the Qian palace means a moment of decisive leadership vision. Layering takes practice.

Phase 4 (Months 24-48): Cross-Palace Reading. Learn to read how palaces interact. Which palace feeds which? Which controls which? How does the career palace relate to the wealth palace? This is the most advanced skill in QMDJ and takes the longest to develop.

Which Skill Set Suits Which Mind

Students with analytical, step-by-step thinking often find BaZi easier to learn. The system rewards logical progression: learn the stems, then the branches, then the combinations, then the timing. Each step builds on the last. If you are good at structured learning and sequential reasoning, BaZi will feel natural.

Students with visual or spatial thinking often find QMDJ more intuitive. The nine-palace grid is a map you look at, not a list you read down. If you see patterns in arrangements rather than sequences, if you think in terms of positions and relationships rather than cause and effect, QMDJ will resonate faster.

This does not mean you cannot learn both. It means your natural starting point differs. Start with the system that matches your thinking style, then learn the other once you have competence in the first.

The Common Foundation

Both systems share the same foundation: the five-element theory, the Heavenly Stems, and the Earthly Branches. Learning this shared foundation thoroughly before choosing a system saves months of study time in both paths. Students who try to learn elements and stems separately for each system waste time. Students who learn the shared foundation once and apply it to both systems progress faster in both.

BaZi rewards the student who follows the thread from beginning to end. QMDJ rewards the student who can see the whole grid at once. Both reward persistence. Neither rewards shortcuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn both systems at the same time? Not recommended for beginners. The interpretive frameworks differ enough that learning both simultaneously causes confusion. Master one to competence, then learn the other. The shared foundation makes the second system faster.

Which system has more learning resources in English? BaZi has more English-language books and courses available. QMDJ has fewer English resources, which is why I focus on teaching it in English for students worldwide. The shortage of English QMDJ materials is one reason structured courses are valuable.

How long until I can read charts for myself? For BaZi, about 6 to 12 months of consistent study. For QMDJ destiny, about 12 to 18 months. Learning to read your own chart is a milestone, not the finish line. The real growth comes from practicing on many different charts.
