Annual Energy Activation (增能 / Activation Boxes):
Every year, one Heavenly Stem (天干) and one Earthly Branch (地支) are energized or activated.
These activations are fixed for the entire year, and they start from February 4th (立春, the start of the solar year).
Effect of Activation:
When a box in the Qimen chart (a “palace”) contains the activated stem or branch:
The energy of that box increases (e.g., from 100% to 200%).
If the box is Empty (空亡), the emptiness is filled—it becomes “usable.”
If there’s no emptiness, the energy overflows to the opposite box (180° away in the 9-palace grid).
That opposite box also gains energy or fills up any emptiness.
Application:
Before interpreting a Qimen chart, you “clean” the chart by:
Identifying the activated stem and branch of the year.
Locating which boxes in the 9-grid palace contain those stem/branch.
Applying the overflow effect if necessary.
This process makes the chart more “accurate” by revealing hidden or enhanced information.
✅ Example Given: Year 2021
Stem: 辛 (Xin)
Branch: 丑 (Chou)
These are the yearly activations.
Find box with Xin → say it’s in box 7 → this box becomes 200%.
If no emptiness, overflow to box 3 (opposite), which also gets 200%.
Find box with Chou (using app) → say it’s in box 8.
Box 8 is activated.
If opposite box 2 is empty → it is now filled to 100%.
If not empty → it gains more energy.

2024: Jia (hidden stem) + Chen
2025: Yi (乙) + Si (巳)
(These follow the 60-year stem-branch cycle.)
