What Is the Open Door (开门, Kai Men) in Qi Men Dun Jia?

The Open Door (开门, Kai Men) is the most auspicious door in Qi Men Dun Jia. It governs new beginnings, official matters, career moves and travel, and it is the door you look for when launching something or seeking help from people in authority.

Open Door Meaning

If a chart could say one word, the Open Door says go. It carries the energy of an unlocked gate: applications submitted, doors knocked on, journeys started, offices entered. Classically it belongs to the Qian palace in the northwest, the direction of authority and the father figure, which is why practitioners reach for it whenever a question involves officials, superiors, licenses or promotion.

In my practice the Open Door shows up in almost every question about career advancement, government applications, new business launches and long-distance travel. A client asking whether to file the paperwork now or wait is, without knowing it, asking whether the Open Door is sitting anywhere useful in the hour chart.

Treat it as the door of momentum and freshness, not a guarantee. Combined with weak stars or deceptive gods it can mean an opening that looks inviting but has nothing behind it, so beginners should read the door together with the rest of the palace before acting. When to Use It, When to Avoid It

Ask for the Open Door when something needs to begin: a company registration, a job application, a first meeting, a launch, an official filing, travel toward an opportunity. It is the door of beginnings, and it performs best when the beginning is meant to be seen.

Where you need to stay quiet, skip it. Open energy publicizes whatever it touches, so concealment, discreet negotiations and plans you are not ready to announce belong to other doors, mainly the Blocked Door. In the classical texts the eight doors descend from the eight trigrams, which is why each door keeps a trigram’s palace and element. When its palace is disturbed by clashes, classical practitioners speak of the door being blocked or weakened, and date selection simply means choosing an hour where the same door sits in a friendlier palace.
