What Is the Rest Door (休门, Xiu Men) in Qi Men Dun Jia?

The Rest Door (休门, Xiu Men) in Qi Men Dun Jia governs recovery, harmony, relationships and diplomacy. It is the door of making peace, recharging, and repairing what conflict has broken.

Rest is not the opposite of ambition. It is the maintenance schedule of ambition.

Rest Door Meaning

Where the Open Door pushes outward, the Rest Door settles. It belongs to the Kan palace in the north, water territory, and it carries the feel of an evening after hard work: repair, consolidation, gentle conversation, treaties rather than battles.

I use it constantly in relationship questions and in any situation involving negotiation between parties who have already clashed. It is the natural door for reconciliation, hospitality, social gatherings, medical recovery and restorative rest. It is also a sensible door for repairs, whether of a house, a contract or a friendship.

When to Use It, When to Avoid It

The Rest Door earns its keep in reconciliation. Use it for repairing a relationship, negotiating a truce, resolving a family conflict, or recovering your own health and energy before the next push. Marriage matters and quiet diplomacy also sit under it.

It is the wrong tool for force. Debt collection, lawsuits, hostile takeovers and anything that relies on pressure will stall under Rest energy, which calms and slows rather than strikes. Classical practice also keeps it away from funeral matters.

A Classical Note

In the classical texts the eight doors descend from the eight trigrams, which is why each door keeps a trigram’s palace and element. When its palace is disturbed by clashes, classical practitioners speak of the door being blocked or weakened, and date selection simply means choosing an hour where the same door sits in a friendlier palace.
